Vantage Opens its First African Data Center Campus in Johannesburg

Today, Vantage Data Centers– a leading data center firm– has officially commenced operations in its Johannesburg data center campus. The Johannesburg campus is a billion-dollar investment and the company’s first data center facility in Africa.

The 30-acre (12 hectares) campus located in Waterfall City in Midrand is home to three data centers. These data centers which offer an 80MW of critical IT load are spread across 650,000 square feet (60,000 square meters). In addition, the campus is strategically positioned 30 kilometers from the O.R. Tambo International Airport for easier accessibility.

The first two-story data center operates on a 16MW of critical IT load across 130,000 square feet (12,000 square meters), while the other two two-story facilities will offer 32MW each of critical IT load across a combined 520,000 square feet (48,000 square meters).

According to Vantage, the tech project was completed in 10 months, 10 days ahead of schedule. The company added that there were no lost-time incidents throughout the 1.5 million working hours used in its completion.

The campus complements the thriving business and data center ecosystem in South Africa and leverages its fiber connectivity to Africa. In tune with company standards, the Johannesburg campus offers renewable energy options, limits carbon emissions, and maintains energy-conserving operations with top-notch power usage effectiveness (PUE).

Therefore, in June, Vantage announced a 20-year power purchase agreement with SolarAfrica to supply 87MWp of renewable energy to supplement the local grid powering the campus.

What Vantage Data Centres Says

In a statement by Justin Jenkins, COO, EMEA at Vantage Data Centers, “our rapid turnaround on the construction of our first Johannesburg facility has allowed us to more quickly meet the demand for hyperscale data centers in the area”.

“This project created hundreds of jobs that will continue into the next phase of construction, and we thank our teams for their dedication and commitment to deliver such a high-quality product for our customers,” he added.

Today, Vantage announced breaking new grounds on a second German campus in Frankfurt (FRA22). The second facility will boost the company’s presence in the European market.

Once Frankfurt II is completed, it’ll become Vantage’s ninth data center campus, six of which are operational (Berlin I, Cardiff, Frankfurt I, Johannesburg, Warsaw, and Zurich).
