Getting Into & Surviving in Tech: Weekend Rant

Shebi you are seeing that tech bros are not normal. Show me one tech bro that behaves like a normal human being and I will drop 10k for you asap. There’s always one thing or the other going wrong with them.

It’s either they don’t have a stable love life, they are battling depression and the need to constantly give themselves to work or they don’t get enough sleep (we all know what how lack of sleep drives people crazy, need I say more?)

We are all going through a lot, literally. It’s only in Nigeria that I know that no one wants to talk about how tech as a profession will take many things from you. Everybody loves the plenty money that tech gives so if you dare to say pim, there are warriors waiting to have your head.

I mean look at this

The day i dared to complain about the stress that comes with tech on twitter, I was almost torn to shreds. They were after my life, I had to take the tweet down.

I wish it wasn’t like this though.

I mean, I want money but who says I must not complain when the stress that comes with the job is holding my neck like this

I need to rant. I need to scream out loud and tell everyone that tech is blood money and it’s your blood you will be using to make the money.

Imposter Syndrome

As a beginner, you will carry the burden of wanting to learn everything in your chosen field. Of course, you don’t want to come off as an impostor or die from embarrassment when a senior colleague throws a question at you and you just stare blankly into space.

I think people really undermine how paralysing imposter syndrome can be. No one is condemning you or calling you out on your lack of skills but here you are, dying on the inside and beating yourself up because you can’t remember the exact way to write a code. It’s crazy.

Stress

Remember when I said tech money is blood money and it’s your blood? I promise you, you will be mightily stressed. The only way to survive in tech is to learn to have a work-life balance, you have to make time to hangout with friends, spend time with your loved ones and also relax. Prioritising your tech job over your personal needs will have you hating your job so much. Maintain a balance between both corporate and personal life, give the same effort you would give your job to enjoying yourself.

Continuous Learning

Life in tech moves very fast. You have to follow up on the latest development in your field to remain relevant. This is especially true for the non-tech in tech professions. New methodologies, principles and processes spring up everyday and iut’s a real struggle to keep up with the changing times. You will need to dedicate some of your time to brushing up your core skills to increase your on-the-job performance. Let’s face it, school doesn’t teach you everything you need to know. Putting in some extra time and effort in your first year in tech is one of the best ways to accelerate your learning curve.

Final Words

I said final words cos this is where i drop my pen, I don taya. I will come back again soon but for now, mouth dey pain me and tech bros have started giving me the stink eye. It’s not like we’re not on the same page o. Anyways, bye till next time.
