Treepz, Nigerian Tech Startup Bags Award for Best Industrial Tech Company in Africa

Treepz, a Nigerian mobility startup, was named Africa’s Best Industrial Tech Company in 2022 in the recently concluded Global Startup Awards (GSA). The event was held in Cape Town, South Africa, and had over 7500 tech startups from 54 countries across Africa.

Treepz (formerly Plentywaka) is a leading mobility company founded by Nigerian entrepreneur Onyeka Akumah. The startup and other top-level startups in Africa were rewarded by the GSA for their contribution to Africa’s industrial growth.

The Global Startup Awards is a network focused on startups with tech-influenced sustainable development goals (SDGs) aimed at improving the quality of life in Africa. Additionally, the GSA seeks to connect the best African tech startups across the continent to a global network of leading investors and innovation ecosystems. The network also allows participants to meet prospective mentors, partners, and clients across the continent and get in touch with the latest industry trends.

In this year’s edition, the winners will get funding—the number one problem faced by African Tech startups—for their environmental and socioeconomic impact on Africa.

Over the years, Treepz has established itself as a leading startup with almost 10,000 daily rides completed on its platform. The company has also achieved remarkable success– including completing 1.5 million bookings within 30 months of operations and expanding to Ghana and Uganda with the acquisitions of Stabus and Ugabus in both countries.

Furthermore, Treepz has the number one market share in Ghana and Uganda within a year’s operation in both countries. The startup has also saved 519,792 kg of CO2 emissions across Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda in the last three months– a milestone achieved because of the use of eco-friendly Treepz-powered vehicles.

Treepz’s operations in the three countries continue to redefine Africa’s transportation sector by offering unique services such as shared daily rides and transportation software tailored for schools and transport businesses.

Co-founders of Loudhailer and GIIG, Jo Griffiths and Caitlin Nash, who were present at the event had something to say:

“We know that we need to find millions of solutions if we are going to have any dent in solving the climate crisis, and we know that a lot of those solutions sit here on the African continent. We believe that we can unlock Africa’s growth a lot faster and position it as the tech continent of the future with these proof-points over a few multi-year periods.”

The just concluded 2022 award ceremony featured 12 categories including Industrial Tech, Women-in-Tech, HealthTech, AgriTech, and FinTech.
